Secondary Characters

December 17, 2012 at 10:40 AMKatie McGarry

I have to admit, sometimes I enjoy writing my secondary characters more than my main characters. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of love for my hero and heroine, but sometimes I come across a secondary character who steals my heart or just makes me laugh.

So what's the secret to writing secondary characters that pop off the page? Giving them their own backstory, goals, conflicts, and motivations. Like real life, we are not living in a bubble. Our friends and family have problems, issues, and dreams in life and our writing should reflect this. When we create secondary characters who reflect those around us, we make them real and therefore the reader will care for them as well.

Want to go deeper? Have your secondary characters' goals conflict with those of your hero/heroine. For instance, Beth loves Noah and Isaiah and will do anything to protect them and the small family the three of them have created. Echo is a threat to her world so therefore she pushes Noah on his relationship with Echo.

So I'm curious. Who is your favorite secondary character in Pushing the Limits or who is your favorite secondary character in any book?

Dare You To Cover and Pushing the Limits Deleted Scene

December 2, 2012 at 3:42 PMKatie McGarry

It's here! It's here! The Dare You To cover has been released and so has the cover copy! Even more exciting? I've also added a deleted kissing scene from Pushing the Limits. To see the kissing scene, head over to the Deleted Scenes page!

Here is the cover copy for Dare You To! I'm so excited for you guys to meet Beth and Ryan. Dare You To is scheduled to be released in 2013!

"I dare you..."

If anyone knew the truth about Beth Risk's home life, they'd send her mother to jail and seventeen-year-old Beth who knows where. So she protects her mom at all costs. Until the day her uncle swoops in and forces Beth to choose between her mom's freedom and her own happiness. That's how Beth finds herself living with an aunt who doesn't want her and going to a school that doesn't understand her. At all. Except for the one guy who shouldn't get her, but does....

Ryan Stone is the town golden boy, a popular baseball star jock-with secrets he can't tell anyone. Not even the friends he shares everything with, including the constant dares to do crazy things. The craziest? Asking out the Skater girl who couldn't be less interested in him.

But what begins as a dare becomes an intense attraction neither Ryan nor Beth expected. Suddenly, the boy with the flawless image risks his dreams-and his life-for the girl he loves, and the girl who won't let anyone get too close is daring herself to want it all....

Goodreads Choice Finals!

November 19, 2012 at 8:07 AMKatie McGarry

How do I start?

I'm one of those people who loses words when I become emotional. I guess that could come across a little shocking as I'm a writer, but it's true. This morning, I found out that Pushing the Limits made it to the final round of the Goodreads Choice Awards for Young Adult fiction. I'll admit it--I cried very happy tears.

I don't know how to thank you other than saying the words: thank you. To be nominated was an unbelievable honor for me. To have made it this far is unbelievably mind blowing. Walking into a store and seeing my book on a shelf still leaves me opened mouth and silent. To have proceeded this far in the nomination process knocks the breath out of my body.

Thank you. And I would be honored if you voted for me, Echo, Noah, and all the characters of Pushing the Limits one more time. Vote here.

On another note--related, yet not...I want to say happy first date anniversary to my husband. Sixteen years ago, this coming weekend, my husband and I went on our first official date together. We'd been "hanging out" together for awhile before that, but this specific evening is what changed everything for us. I still get butterflies when I think of that night: how a fine mist of rain covered both of us, how the street light shined against his auburn hair giving it a golden sheen, how his green eyes shined and for the first time in my life I found myself falling utterly and completely in love.

I wrote about our first official date (and kiss) for USA Today's Happy Ever After Blog.

Happy First Date Anniversary, D! I love you with all my heart and soul. You inspire me.

Kentucky Book Fair and Goodreads Choice Semifinal Round

November 12, 2012 at 7:37 AMKatie McGarry

First, I'll open up with some exciting news! Pushing the Limits has been nominated for RT Magazine's 2012 Reviewer's Choice Awards for Young Adult Contemporary Novel!

I'll admit, I cried very happy tears when I found out!

Also, the semifinal round is open for the Goodreads Choice Awards. Please vote for Pushing the Limits!

This past Saturday, I had the honor of participating in the Kentucky Book Fair in Frankfort, Kentucky. It was my first book fair, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Of course, the day started off awesome when Bethany Griffin picked me up for the drive in with orange juice and a chicken biscuit in tow!

The event was packed and it was a joy to talk to readers. Especially when I got to talk to fans of Pushing the Limits. When the people who came to meet me got excited, I got excited! My favorite is the teen girl who waved until she was able to reach the table because I kept waving back!

What else was cool? Meeting other authors! Below, is a picture of me, Bethany Griffin (Masque of the Red Death), Julie Cross (Tempest) , and Irene Latham (Don't Feed the Boy). Trust me, every part of me just about bursts out of my skin when I meet other authors. I still can't believe that I'm published, none-the-less have the opportunity to meet with and talk to other authors!

If that wasn't exciting enough, I spent the day chatting with the amazing Karen Ann Hopkins, my table mate at the fair and fellow Harlequin Teen author. Karen's YA Contemporary novel, Temptation, was released this summer and I'm dying to finish my current work-in-progress so I can read it!
